First Steps for Aging Tapes

Practical triage steps before playing, cleaning or transferring aging recordings.

Start with an inspection

Read the labels, photograph the case and look for warped shells, loose leader, sticky residue, unusual smells or visible growth. Keep detailed notes before changing anything.

Know when not to play

If tape shows mold, sticking, curling, shedding or obvious damage, stop. Playback may spread contaminants or destroy recorded material; consult a preservation specialist.

Create a stable environment

Keep original media boxed, vertical where appropriate, away from direct light and large swings in temperature and relative humidity. Avoid magnetic sources.

Transfer thoughtfully

Use a maintained machine compatible with the format and recording standard. Capture a preservation-quality master, make a separate access copy and keep backups in more than one location.
